Dovanna Dean developed her knowledge base for agriculture and environmental stewardship in 1998 as a Permaculture Designer, but the seed was planted as a child watching her grandmother raise basil and other kitchen herbs on top of their goldfish tank. In 2012, she completed an Aquaponics Intensive under the instruction of John Pade, Rebecca Nelson, and James Rakocy, each industry leaders in aquaponics research, education, and development.
